the pretender: A Poem

she was never asleep

but the others all were

it was best not to

awaken them, frighten them

they knew nothing else

had nothing else

only this constant rest

nothing other than this state

of blissful unknowing

she pretended to snooze

well enough as she could

they couldn’t know that

she was awake, never sleeping

because she would lose

her bed forever
