Our Songs: A Poem

my wish was for deafness

whenever I heard our music

all the memories flooded me

summer car rides and weekends

the times I would never forget

my playlist began to betray me

and there was no escaping it

I will not let myself hear

take the verses from my mind

now that you are gone

my heart can’t bear our songs

  1. Share memories of times now at best conjuring melancholy. It’s funny how a whole soundtrack can disappear so quickly and only come back to remind us when a certain song comes on the radio years later.

      1. I had this once but after a long time I feel I can listen to the soundtrack again and associate the good times and places with it and selectively ignore the less pleasant parts.
