Aliens

difference

why must we fear it

eyes not like mine

skin toned as the earth

tongues form sounds unknown

they come in peace

but we blame and cast away

they live, hurt, love, and bleed

we all cry and sing, dream and die

let’s hold hands and see beauty

wipe each other’s tears

though a stranger they may be

we are brothers all the same

“Give to those who have nothing to give you”

Rupi Kaur

As people on this planet, I believe we shouldn’t have a narrow view. My life and your life, our choices affect the world. We shouldn’t only care for our own prospects. We shouldn’t frown upon those who are struggling to adapt to a new life. See the strength in their efforts, and remember that we don’t know what brought them here looking for something better. An act of kindness to a stranger who might not know our side of the world shouldn’t be withheld. Do our part to welcome those who are new. Just take a moment to smile at them, or see a way you could help them on their way. We all carry the 99.9% of the same DNA, so we are all truly brothers. Let’s act like it.

The poem and writing above is a rumination inspired by Coldplay’s upcoming album Everyday Life. I don’t think I mentioned this before, but Coldplay is my favorite band. They pre-released the songs Orphans, which touches the topic of refugees, and Everyday Life. They are amazing songs and I recommend them.
